2010 Mimosas & Memories
Saturday June 19, 2009     11am – 2pm     Shiner Restaurant & Bar

2009 M&M was such fun, we decided to hold the The 2010 Mimosas & Memories Luncheon again at Shiner Restaurant & Bar.  “The Art and Artistry of Shiner” celebrated just a sample of the wide variety of artists found in our area.  The restaurant was filled with color and aroma of the many types of paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry, baked goods, and more.  Rose Lewis of the Art House discussed her many years as an art  teacher in Houston and as a local graphic artist.   Furniture-maker, woodworker, artist Ross Teiken displayed and discussed his beautiful art pieces, including a hand-made rocking chair that everyone wanted to take home.  Local student Rachel Kalich showed off several of her award-winning pieces from the Houston Livestock Show Art Contest and the Shiner Flag Contest.  Sidney Spires, author and co-owner of Shinerville, also gave an interesting talk about the work of herself and James Mangum, sculptor, painter, author, and saintmaker.  Local florists Laura Sciba and Sheri Beckham showed their skills at flower arranging, which decorated each table in interesting tableaus.  And finally Chef Randy Rouse worked his magic while discussing the artistry of baking.

The many display cases around the restaurant were filled with a dozen home-made desserts made by locals who entered our baking contest.  These desserts were also auctioned for our fund-raiser.  Additionally, there were raffle tickets sold for a special drawing; Special thanks goes to Melinda Mills of the Creative Mill, based in Shiner, for her donation of a custom created jewelry designed by a New York artist.

The proceeds of the 2010 went to the Rose Lewis Art House for renovation of facilities.  Thanks to all of the bakers, artists, artisans, donors, and staff for making this a great event!

2009 Pumpkin Patch
Saturday October 10, 2009     9am – 2pm     Rose Lewis Art House

2009 Pumpkin Patch was as fun as always with games, face-painting and other activities. This year the pumpkins and mums were plentiful and beautiful, with lots of color added at the pumpkin-painting station. The sidewalk chalk contest was won by up-and-coming artists in all age divisions. Dr. Marshall Bishop and local historian Barbara Tieken read holiday books to the children, who then happily applied their pent-up energies to the piņata filled with goodies. The cool, dry weather was perfect for cups of hot chocolate (thanks Jeff & Anne Pesek) that helped add to the feeling of the new season! Special thanks go out to Smile Time for providing fall photography, and of course to Rose Lewis for painting many happy faces and graciously allowing HOTS to host this event at the Art House.

2009 Mimosas & Memories

Saturday June 13, 2009     11am – 2pm     Shiner Restaurant & Bar

The 2009 Mimosas & Memories Luncheon was held this year at the recently opened Shiner Restaurant & Bar, in downtown Shiner. Our program certainly fulfilled its promise to “celebrate the delicious legacy of Shiner, Texas”, thanks to the efforts of Chef Randy Rouse of the Shiner R & Bar, and Executive Chef, Shinerite, and Author Jennifer Schaertl. The festivities began with mimosas, visiting, and perusing the silent auction items. The beautiful hand-carved bar was lined with home-made vintage-recipe cakes ranging from Shiner favorites, such as Poppyseed Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, and fruit kolaches, to chef-made treats Citrus-Peach Upside Down Cake, and Bavarian Chocolate Torte. Spoetzl Brewery also donated a signed 100-year book and cookbook/baking kit to the silent auction. While a lovely 3-course lunch of poblano-corn soup, Caesar salad, Spinich-mushroom quiche, and green beans was served, attendees were entertained and given a glimpse into the methods of cooking and baking with Shiner Beers. Randy cooked up his famous Jalapeņo Cheddar - Shiner Bock Beer Bread and butter, and Jennifer prepared a duo of Shiner Black Custard over Fruit Cobbler. Delicious! A special presentation on the history and impact of Spoetzl Brewery was given by local student, Jessica Arledge. Her great research and presentation gave everyone a special taste for the wonderful foods cooked up, served up, and enjoyed with Shiner beers. Thanks to all of the chefs, bakers, and staff for your efforts in making this such a memorable and successful fundraiser. The proceeds from our event were donated to the Edwin Wolters Memorial Museum for the preservation and digitization of thousand of Shiner area photographs that will now be available to the public. This year we actually went beyond sold-out to overflow seating, so make sure you buy your tickets early next year!

Presentation of Historic Plaques

In conjunction with our historic plaque program, several plaques have been presented in the last year. Shiner is lucky to have many homes and properties built in the late 1800s and early 1900s that have been well preserved and restored. HOTS developed a program to help home-owners research history and erect plaques that recognize their unique place in the history of Shiner. Convent….. Text will be completed Monday.
